Who Knew?!?!?!?! Actors Who Turned Down Major Roles!

Marlon Wayans was considered to play the role of WHO?!? When it comes to acting, many opportunities come along. Sometimes actors are considered for a role, but that actor may have turned it down for several reasons (schedule conflict, no interest, etc.). It happens. The shocking part is discovering who turned down roles…famous roles at that. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at major roles that were initially intended for another actor.

Jennifer Hudson “Precious” (Precious)

Credit: Slash Film

The American Idol Alum was considered for the role of Clarice “Precious” Jones. She was deeply moved by the script and the fact that she was considered. However, she decided against auditioning because she wanted to do other things that had nothing to do with her weight. Which is undertakable. Gabourey Sidibe eventually inked the deal, grabbed an Oscar nomination and became a household name.

Michael B. Jordan “Dr. Dre” (Straight Outta Compton)

Credit: Cult MTL

This one hurt cause I can see MBJ playing this role. When the roles were set to be filled for the film Straight Outta Compton, Dr. Dre wanted Michael B. Jordan to play him in the movie. Unfortunately, MBJ had just signed on to play the Human Torch in the mid Fantastic Four reboot. The role was later given to Corey Hawkins who nailed the role of Dr. Dre.

Reese Witherspoon “Sidney Prescott” (Scream)

Credit: WhatCulture

This is an interesting one. When Scream was given the green light to start production, Drew Barrymore was casted to play Sidney. However, she changed her mind and decided to play Casey, the movie’s first kill (does this count as a spoiler after all these years)? Anywho, the role of Sidney was eventually offered to Reese Witherspoon. She decided to turn the role down. A blessing in disguise because I can’t see anyone BUT Neve Campbell as Sidney.

Angela Bassett “Leticia Musgrove” (Monster’s Ball)

Credit: I Love Old School Music

Monster’s Ball. What a wild movie! Leticia Musgrove was a woman who was struggling to make ends meet all while dealing with her husband who was incarcerated and a severely obese son. The craziest discovery is that this role was meant for Angela Bassett. Angela made the decision to turn the role down. She was against playing a stereotype with black women. This role then went to Halle Berry. Interesting enough, Halle became the first (and only) black woman to win Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Academy Awards.

John Travolta “Forrest Gump” (Forrest Gump)

Credit: Remind Magazine

Director Robert Zemeckis wanted John Travolta to play the beloved role of Forrest Gump. He was super confident to the point there was no plan B option lined up. However, Travolta was also offered to play Vincent Vega in Pulp Fictionand he couldn’t say no. The role landed in Tom Hanks lap and the rest is history. I honestly can’t see anyone but Hanks in this role.

Will Smith “Neo” (The Matrix) and “Django” (Django Unchained)

Credit: Entertainment Weekly

After Will Smith played “Agent J” in Men In Black, I could see Will Smith playing Neo. In fact the role was offered to him first, but Smith did not feel connected to the role and couldn’t see himself playing Neo. Mainly because he didn’t think that role would make an impact in the movie industry. So, he turned it down. Keanu Reeves eventually stepped in and took on the role. Will Smith was also inked to play the role of Django in Django Unchained. However, due to “creative differences”, Smith walked away from the role…which was later given to Jamie Foxx.

Marlon Wayans “Robin” (Batman Returns/Batman Forever)

Credit: Screen Rant

This is SUPER interesting! The baby of the Wayans Family clan was starting to find his stride in the late 90s. Before joining his older brother in the 1992 film “Mo’ Money”, Wayans was casted to play Robin in Batman Returns. The ink was literally dry (even costumes were already designed). However, due to the introduction of many characters (Catwoman, The Penguin & Max Shreck), having another new character felt overcrowd (basically adding Robin didn’t make sense after all). This resulted in Wayans being removed from the film. Tim Burton kept Wayans in mind for Batman Forever, but he became an instant afterthought when Burton was replaced with Joel Schumacher (who offered the role to Chris O’Donnell). The silver lining? Being that Wayans signed a contract and was removed from the film, he was paid $100,000 and still receives residuals for Batman Returns. Blessing in disguise indeed!

Eddie Murphy “Eddie Valiant” (Who Framed Roger Rabbit)

Credit: Daily Mail

With Eddie’s comedic style and ability to adapt to almost any role, it’s pretty surprising that he would turn down a significant role such as Eddie Valiant. He tells Jimmy Fallon that he wasn’t with the idea of mixing animation with live action. At the time, that didn’t make sense to him (glad Michael Jordan didn’t feel that way about Space Jam). Because of this, the role eventually went to the late Bob Hoskins. If you’re wondering, yes, Eddie does regret not taking on the role.

Jim Carrey “Buddy” (Elf)

Credit: People Magazine

The prime example of “too much time has passed”. Here’s a quick fun fact: Elf was released in 2003 but it was written back in 1993. Crazy right?!?! Which now makes sense as to why the role of Buddy was written for Jim Carrey (who was starting to become a household name in the early 90s). For unknown reasons, production never got going. When plans were finally set in place to fil Elf in 2002, Jim Carrey was no longer interested in paying Buddy. The role eventually went to Will Ferrell who did the role justice.

Beyonce’ “Ally” (A Star is Born) & “Princess Tiana” (Princess & the Frog)

Credit: Blavity

The characters of Jack and Ally were originally meant for Beyonce’ and….Clint Eastwood. Everything was all set to begin production but then…..SURPRISE!! Beyonce’ ended up shocking the world with her twin pregnancy reveal! Seeing that Beyonce’ was no longer able to do the role, Clint Eastwood also walked away to do another film. While Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga did extremely well, I wonder what would’ve happened if Bey and Clint completed the movie. Keeping it on Queen Bey, she was at the top of the consideration list for the voice/singing actor role of Princess Tiana. However, Bey refused to audition. She came in expecting an offer but because she wouldn’t audition, they moved on. Tyra Banks, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys all auditioned for the role as well. Luckily the role went to Bey’s Dreamgirls castmate Anika Noni Rose who did a PHENOMENAL job!

That’s all folks!!! Were you shocked at these discoveries?? Let us know in the comments!

Black Royalty? Yep, we exist outside of Zamunda!!

*For the purpose of this blog post, here we go* England crowned a new King to rule the land and his name is Charles III. Still can’t believe his once mistress is now the Queen….anyway, let me get back on topic LOL!! May 6th was the day of Charles III’s Coronation. Not much to write home about but nevertheless there’s a new Sheriff in town.

For a long time, when it came to royalty (before Princess Meghan), the only black Royals I was aware of were the ones on TV. Mufasa & Sarabi (they count), King Jaffe Joffer & Queen Aoleon (a-alien..IYKYK lol) and the most recent Royal Family of Wakanda to name a few. Never believed black royalty existed in real life. However, my mind is blown because to my surprise, black royalty does exist across the world! So of course, I had to do my research and….ya’ll! I was pleasantly surprised and decided to show them some love!

Charlotte of Mecklenburg

Let me start off with a GOOD one! Mother Queen Charlotte. Why am I choosing to highlight her first? She became the first Black Queen of England when she married King George III in the late 1700s. Researchers question whether she was truly the first Black Queen of England but guess what? She was and I’m standing by that! Herstory!

Alessandro de Medici

De Medici was the first Duke of Florence which made him the first black Head of State in the modern world. There’s belief that his father was Pope Clement VII but that has not been confirmed.

Queen Sylvia Nagginda of Buganda

Becoming the wife of King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi in 1999, she became the first Queen of Uganda that has been able to aide the Uganda government with the development of the kingdom.

Prince Kunle Omilana & Princess Keisha Omilana of Nigeria

If “I want her to love me for who I am, not because of what I am” were a person. Prince Kunle did not reveal to Princess Keisha that he was a Prince until 2 years into their relationship! Wanting to have a “simpler” life and marriage, he chose not to live the traditional lifestyle of a Prince. Sounds familiar???

King Letsie III & Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso of Lesotho

Queen Masenate Mohato officially became the first “commoner” to marry into the Lesotho Royal Family when she married King Letise II in 2000. Their union resulted in the birth of three children.

Princess Ariana Austom Makonnen of Ethopia

Washington D.C. Educator Ariana Makonnen met her husband, the Great Grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie I, Prince Joel Makonnen in a nightclub in 2005. He didn’t reveal his identity to her until a few months after they started dating. Their relationship was off and on for 10 years before Prince Joel proposed in 2014. They are happily married living in LA.

Princess Angela of Liechtenstein

In January 2000, Princess Angela became the first Afro-Panamanian woman to marry into the Liechtenstein dynasty. Here is a fun fact! Princess Angela’s wedding gown was the inspiration behind Meghan Markle choosing her dress for her wedding to Harry in 2018. It was her personal tribute to Princess Angela.

Countess Mary Vou Habsburg of Austria

This story also mirrors Meghan Markle to an extent. Sudan native Mary Vou Habsburg married Count Ferdinand Leopold Count von Habsburg in August of 1999 in Nairobi, Kenya. Their union brought forth controversary amongst the public because Ferdinand married a commoner who’s black. However, controversary conversations ceased after the head of the Habsburg Royal Family, Dr. Otto von Habsburg stated and deckared that all marriages are equal.

 Princess Sikhanyiso of Swaziland

I chose that picture because the side eye is SERVING!! This beauty of a Princess is the oldest daughter of King Mswati III. The oldest of 30 children I might add (I did the research; he has many wives…like several). Princess Sikhanyiso is an advocate of AIDS and poverty, which has a huge effect in her country.

LisaRaye McCoy

I had to save this one for last because even I didn’t know this!! Diamond was once Royalty? Yep, this is true! She became royalty when she married former Chief Minister of Turks & Caicos, Michael Eugene Misick in 2006. At that time, her title was “First Lady of the Turks & Caicos”. They unfortunately divorced in 2008. LisaRaye dodged a MASSIVE bullet because in 2009, Misick resigned due to corruption selling off public land to fund his many investments. Whew!

There you have it yall!!! Princess Meghan may be the most popular Royal but I loooove to see that more exists in this world!! We will forever stan Black Royalty!!

An Open Letter to the Hudlin Brothers (Reginald & Warrington)

If you know me, you know that my love for Black Cinema runs deep; especially Black Cinema from the 90s. One of my favorite movies from this era is House Party.  A simple, yet phenomenal movie about teenagers (and probably a few young adults) kicking it at a house party…. along with other craziness that takes place!! I absolutely love this cult classic that has stood the test of time! House Party is based on a short film thesis project that was written by a young man who was attending Harvard University at the time. Inspired by his experiences from his upbringing in his hometown, he took that and turned it into a feature film. What else makes it special?? He directed his own film and another young man, his brother, produced it. Let’s not stop at House Party though!! There’s another film that was directed by Reginald and was co-produced by his brother Warrington and that’s the 1992 classic Boomerang starring Eddie Murphy! How dope is that?!

Who are these young men that I’m speaking of? Their names are Reginald and Warrington Hudlin. Why am I writing an open letter to them?? Because they hail from the city of East St. Louis, which also happens to be my hometown! It was such a mind-blowing moment discovering this information when I was a kid! It’s not often you can tell people that some of your favorite movies were directed and produced by people from your hometown. In fact, that’s a huge flex!

So, what has The Hudlin Brothers been up to these days??

While Warrington has been keeping a low profile, Reginald has made several major moves and continues to do so within his career as a writer, producer, and director. He has such an impressive track record! Let’s take a look, shall we?? Reginald’s “Directorial” work includes The Great White Hype, The Ladies Man, Marshall, The Black Godfather & Sydney. His “Producing” work includes BeBe’s Kids, Ride, Django Unchained, Burning Sands, Marshall & The Boondocks (Executive Producer).

But hold on now!!!! That’s not all!! Check this out:

-Launched Hudlin Entertainment

-The President of Entertainment for BET (2005-2008)

-Created The BET Honors and the BET Hip Hop Awards

-Wrote for the Black Panther Comics for Marvel 2005 to 2008. He wrote “Bride of the Panther”!

-Produced the 88th Academy Awards

-Received an Oscar Nomination for Django Unchained

-Current Executive Producer of the NAACP Image Awards (since 2013)

-Current Executive Producer for the Primetime Emmy Awards

I am truly in awe that someone from my hometown is moving BIG like this!!

That being said….

Dear Hudlin Brothers,

I thank you!!! Thank you so much for your contribution to the film industry. Thank you for the time, effort, and energy that you all have put into this industry. Countless hours of script writing, filming, directing and producing; I know this is hard work, so I thank you! Thank you for putting the city of East St. Louis on the map! I’m forever grateful to be from the same city you all are from.

To Mr. Reginald Hudlin,

You are truly one of a kind. Your passion for this industry goes unnoticed. I see your work, I see your talent, I see YOU!! You are truly one of the greatest of all time! Writer? Director? Producer? You can do it all and you do it extremely well. Who would’ve thought that a short film thesis would turn into one of the best cult classics of all TIME!? A movie that pretty much changed your life! That was you, you did that, and I thank you!! Launching your own entertainment brand?? BOSS move!!! You’ve inspired so many people to become writers, directors & producers. People look up to you, people cite you as one of their favorites in the film industry and I don’t blame them! You’re it!! Being that you are from my hometown, you have no idea how much you inspire me to go out there and leave my mark on this world like you have and continue to do so! You don’t know me, but I am truly proud of you and all that you have done in this industry!  So, thank you!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. Hudlin!!

I want to end it with this quote from Reginald:

“East St. Louis made me who I am…Yes, I went to Harvard...yes I lived in Harlem, and I work in Hollywood, but the key matrix that shaped me was East St. Louis”. That’s a hometown hero right there!

UNSUNG: 90's TV Shows....Popular TV Shows that unfortunately became an afterthought with their Networks..

Have you ever sat and watched a popular Black TV show from the 90s and thought to yourself “whatever happened to this show’, “this show was cancelled before its time” or “this show never got the recognition that it truly deserved”? Yep, I’ve been there too and I wanted to shed some light on those Black TV shows from the 90s that either ended abruptly (some with no rhyme or reason), cancelled while the show was at its peak or ended without a proper send off. Strap yourselves in and take this journey back to the 90s with me! Warning: I’m getting ready to unlock a lot of memories with this one!

Living Single (1993-1998 FOX Network)

It breaks my heart having to add Living Single to the list but here we are. Living Single was such an amazing show and there’s not a show I can relate to more as an adult! By season 5, FOX didn’t care about this show anymore. Only 13 episodes were ordered and filmed. Because the network canceled the show, Living Single gave us one of the worst series finales of ALL time! Max getting pregnant by Kyle via “sperm bank”?! What the hell was that?! LOL!!

ROC (1991-1994 FOX Network)

What made Roc stand out is that the four principle characters were all accomplished stage actors. Because of this, the second season was live in front of an audience (which has not been done in a while at the time). Roc was nominated for an Emmy in 1992 and Charles S. Dutton won an Emmy for his role as Roc Emerson. Ratings resulted in the abrupted cancellation of this show, however, I feel as though more effort could’ve went behind pushing this show (Roc can be streamed on BET+).

New York Undercover (1994-1999 FOX Network)

Admit it, you wish Natalie’s was a real nightclub too! New York Undercover was an amazing show that brought something unique to the world of Police TV Shows! Detectives JC and Torres were cooler than a fan but let’s be real, the show was DOOMED once Detective Torres was killed off in Season 3. By the 4th season, after 3 main characters not returning, it lost steam, resulting in the cancellation of the show! The good news is that episodes air on Friday nights on BET!

South Central (1994 FOX Network)

South Central was a PG TV show version of Boyz N the Hood and it was fantastic!! However, after only 10 episodes in, FOX pulled the plug on the show. Liiiike, did they even give this show a chance??? FOX cited poor ratings as to why the show was axed but we know the truth, it was too “real’ for that network.

In Living Color (1990-1994 FOX Network)

Okay so are you starting to notice this pattern with FOX Network? Yep, me too. On Season 4, Keenan Ivory Wayans was only on 3 episodes (as host) and that was due to the back & forth battle behind the scenes over censorship (even though they gave him the power to poke fun at any and everything). When they couldn’t come up with an agreement, Keenan stepped down. Marlon left with him and by the end of Season 4, the entire Wayans family had no affiliation with the show. Still sucks how they did him.

Moesha (1996-2001 UPN)

Moesha just couldn’t keep her foot out of her mouth and it’s very cringey watching Moesha through adult eyes but let me stick to the topic. By season 6, the ratings dropped (mainly due to Uncle Frank being Dorian’s Father) and instead of giving us a proper season 7 sendoff, they leave us with a cliffhanger that we are still trying to figure out 20 years later: where is Myles?! Who was pregnant!?

My Brother & Me (1994-1995 Nickelodeon)

Goooo Punch!! Sorry, I had to say it!! My Brother and Me had soooooo much potential! My Brother & Me was the first TV show on Nickelodeon to feature a predominately black cast. I also loved that the Mom was a Delta and the Dad was a Que! The show was green lit for a second season. However, due to vison disagreements between producers and creators, the network pulled the plug. A very young Amanda Seales was also on this show!

The PJ’s (1999-2001 FOX/WB)

The PJ’s was just another example of Eddie Murphy’s creative talent. I would’ve been just fine if this were your typical cartoon animation but Eddie collaborated with Will Vinton ClayMation and created a masterpiece! However, what made the PJ’s stand out is the reason it was cancelled. With clay animation, it takes two months to produce one episode, on top of that, it was very expensive to develop these episodes. Unfortunately, that and the declining ratings resulted in the show getting canceled in 2001.

Out All Night (1992-1993 NBC)

From the same team that brought you “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air”, I bring you “Out All Night”. This is another show that may have flown under a lot radars. It starred Patti LaBelle as a singer who ran a Nightclub in LA. The main cast was pretty star studded including Vivica A. Fox, Morris Chestnut, Duane Martin and a very young and adorable Tahj Mowry! This show had the formula to be successful but unfortunately no one cared, resulting in the cancellation. At least Auntie Patti Blessed us with an amazing theme song!

In The House (1995-1999 NBC/UPN)

Okay, I was soooooo torn on which cast picture I wanted to use for In The House, but after thinking about how they treated Debbie Allen & Jeffery Wood after the relaunch of In The House on a new network, I had to go with the OG crew! I absolutely loved In The House. It was lighthearted, funny and not to mention the oh so sexy LL Cool J was on the show!!! By season 3, UPN wanted to make the show more “adult oriented”, resulting in writing off Debbie Allen (she left due to creative differences) and Jeffery Wood. The show lasted 2 more seasons after the relaunch. Reruns are aired on Aspire and HBO Max.

That’s it yall! Do you all remember these shows??? I hope I unlocked several memories for y’all LOL!!

Giving Black Women in Wresting Their Flowers!

By Brittnee’ Jones

Growing up as a wrestling fan, there was a very small amount of Women in the ring who looked like me. I remember Jacqueline, Sapphire and Queen Sharmelle (Booker T’s wife) and I honestly thought they were the legit first black women in the ring. However, when I got older, I discovered that I was completely wrong. Not only were black women wrestling before them, they date back to the early 1950s!! When I discovered this, I immediately did my research! Three women, biological Sisters who grew up during the Jim Crow era where it was hard for black people to make it, sought out on a journey to become professional wrestlers. Ethel Johnson, Marva Scott and Babs Wing along with their best friend Kathleen Wimbley began training at the YMCA in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio. While training, they caught the attention of a local wrestling promoter Billy Wolfe. Through his guide, Babs was the first to go pro followed by Kathleen, Ethel and then Marva,

In 1952, WIngo, Wimbley and Johnson worked a tag match in Baltimore, Maryland (the main event) in which it drew over 3,000 fans. Two years later, Johnson and Wingo competed in a singles’ match in Kansas City, Missouri. This event drew a record breaking 9,000 fans. To receive these numbers during a time of segregation is beyond astonishing! While all of the Sisters including Wimbley gained much success as wrestlers, Ethel Johnson was the most successful of the four. She was deemed “The Biggest Attraction to hit Pro Wrestling”. She was also billed the first Negro Women’s Champion in 1957. Their success altogether made them four of the highest earning women’s wrestlers at that time. Despite racism, sexism, segregation locally and internationally along with many other obstacles, they fought through it all to remain pro wrestlers. Without them, there would be no Alicia Fox, Sasha Banks, Naomi, Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill. Their story is one for the ages and this story is one that needs to be told.

That being said, I had the extreme honor of interviewing Chris Bournea. Writer and Director of Lady Wrestler: The Amazing Untold Story of African American Women in the Ring. In this documentary, Bournea tells the story of Wing, Johnson and Scott and their journey toward their success as Pro Wrestlers in the 1950s! During the interview Bournea states his motivation to branch out on a journey to make sure their story is heard! A portion of his documentary was also highlighted on the A&E network!
